Great article and so very true for some. It takes discipline to stop the amount of emails.
Here's my advice and what I have done for reducing my own amount of emails.
Firstly unsubscribe from all newsletters - all of them. Challenge everyone who adds you - without request - to a newsletter.
Ask the major mail clients, like Mailchimp etc. to add your email to a suppress list. Many have done that for me and it has proved hugely beneficial.
Report all junk mail via spamcop.net and also the Google report form for all gmail spam.
If you are in a company and get copied on dozens of emails based on a CYA (cover your ass) approach, then be brave and tell your colleagues (politely) to stop doing this, ask them to only ever copy you in when they need you or you have agreed to take action on something.
This isn't rocket science, it's time to declutter your email and get started by taking one tiny step each day.
I have a number of case studies - titled 'Spam Reports' on my blog if you'd like to know more.

Wishing you success with your journey.
ps. some days I enjoy zero spam, yes it's true!
